Senior Electrical Design Engineer – Utilities

Job Purpose:
The successful candidate will be responsible for producing and ensuring high quality electrical designs within an agreed scope while working across an Assets and Connections Portfolio. Designs must meet cost, time, and quality objectives.
All designs must adhere to the organisations design and CDM guidelines. These designs could be for non-contestable as well as contestable works.
The successful candidate will be expected to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team to deliver technical design excellence.
Principle Accountabilities:
- Creation of electrical designs that can be built without supervision in accordance with standards and CDM requirements, as well as assurance of other designs.
- In collaboration with Electrical Design, deliver effective designs that conform to all relevant Codes of Practice, company and industry standards (for all designs relevant to Substations).
- Assist in the development of technical, commercial, and contractual documents for the procurement of engineering products.
- Ensure that all relevant legislation, regulations, and company procedures are followed.
- Adherence to design assurance and audit processes.
- Within specified time frames, prepare a concept and developed design from specifications and drawings.
- Give the customer excellent service.
- Work as a member of larger multi-disciplinary teams.
- Work with operational teams to ensure a smooth transition from initial inquiry to final energisation and project closure.
- Meeting the requirements of the designer / principal designer as outlined in the 2015 CDM Regulations.
- Ensure that the design eliminates any hazards that may cause risks and reduces risks from any remaining hazards (in conjunction with CDM).
- Assisting and mentoring team members to improve their technical knowledge and experience.
Skills, Qualifications and Experience:
- A strong electrical engineering background and experience are required. Power system and protection design knowledge at 132KV, 33KV, 11KV, and intermediate voltages.
- Thorough understanding of design processes, as well as relevant DNO, ENA, and International Design Standards, as well as relevant operational aspects to successfully deliver designs.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with external engineering organisations and customers/stakeholders.
- Capable of final design approval in a specific area.
- A strong safety culture, as well as a solid understanding of Construction Design and Management (CDM) Regulations and how they apply to this role.
- Ability to work unsupervised, set and meet personal goals, and identify and implement cost-cutting solutions.
- Excellent teamwork abilities.
- A good understanding of business, environmental, safety, financial, and regulatory issues.
- A general understanding of financial reporting systems.
- Knowledge of project management.
- Proficient in the use of Microsoft desktop applications, particularly Word, Excel, Project, and PowerPoint.
- Strong interpersonal skills, as well as competence in written and oral communication.
- Expertise in the use of AutoCAD and/or Microstation.
- Knowledge of current and technological advances in distribution plant and equipment.
- Broad understanding of cables and overhead lines.
- Contribution to innovative construction concepts and techniques.
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent in engineering or science.
- Chartered Engineer or working toward Chartership.
